Free Fire—The Massively Addictive Portable Battle Royale Game

Free Fire Header

What is Garena Free Fire?

Garena Free Fire is a massively popular mobile battle royale game that has approximately 150 million daily players. To put that in perspective, the Netherlands’ entire population is 17.53. Yes, Free Fire is incredibly popular, but the real question is what makes it so addictive that it is able to stand out from the crowd of Battle Royale games? There are so many of them that there is certainly no shortage for Battle Royale game fans: Apex Legends, Fortnite, PUBG: Battlegrounds, Call of Duty: Warzone, Z1 Battle Royale and so on. Still, Free Fire frequently ranks at the top of the video game revenue charts.

What Sets Free Fire Apart From Other Battle Royale Games?

The main reason that Free Fire is so popular is not exactly difficult to work out—its portability and optimisation. Whereas a lot of battle royale games require powerful computers or game consoles to run, Free Fire runs very smoothly on all types of mobile devices, even low-end ones. Garena has worked hard on optimising the game so that it is accessible to almost everyone. Players are also given the ability to lower the graphics however they need in the settings. This is certainly a factor that sets Free Fire apart from its competitors, as it’s fair to say that most battle royale games don’t run nearly this well on mobile devices.

Another factor that separates Free Fire from its competitors is its highly accessible gameplay. The game reduces the amount of players to 50, meaning that rounds are about 10 minutes each, much shorter than many of its competitors. This means the Free Fire is perfect for busy people blowing off steam during a lunch break.

Other gameplay mechanics contribute to keeping the pace fast. Several times during a game, a drone will fly over the map, revealing the position of players as it crosses them on the radar. Also, in-game buildings do not have any doors or windows, making them less suitable for slow, hide-and-seek games. Not to mention, Free Fire is a lot easier than many other battle royale games due to accessibility features including aim assist, so guns automatically lock onto enemies to lower the chance of missing them.

What is Gameplay Like and What Modes Are There?

Free Fire is a third-person perspective shooter battle royale game. The player can move their character using a joystick and throw items with the fire button. They can also jump, crawl and lie down to avoid incoming fire. Each 10-minute game has you parachuting onto a remote island where you are pit against 49 other players all seeking survival. Players can choose their starting point, drive vehicles around the map and even fight with companion pets, however the goal of each match is always the same—to survive by all means necessary.

What Types of Modes Are There in Free Fire?

There are several modes in Free Fire, but the two main ones are Battle Royale and Clash Squad. Battle Royale mode begins with a total of 52 players landing without weapons on an abandoned island. All of them have to survive by eliminating each other using weapons and other accessories found on the island. Players can either play this mode in ranked where it will impact their rank, or just for fun. Battle Royale mode features the classic, addictive gameplay Free Fire is best known for.

Alternatively, if you are fed-up with fighting alone there is always Clash Squad mode, which only has 8 players at a time in two teams of 4. In this mode, the teams buy weapons using in-game money during a preparation time and then fight the opposing team. A round is won when all 4 members of the opposing team have been defeated. This mode can also be optionally played in ranked. There are a few other modes in Free Fire, but these are the classic two.
